Honchel Chosen as MAC Awardwinner

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Miami freshman Matt Honchel has been named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of Week, the league office announced today. The Harrodsburg, Ky., native is the RedHawks' fourth weekly winner this spring.
The East Division's Pitcher of the Week was Akron's Pat Dyer, while Alex Jones (Player/Northern Illinois) and Zach Cooper (Pitcher/Central Michigan) were the West Division winners.
From his No. 2 spot in the lineup, Honchel batted an amazing .786 in Miami's series win over Toledo this weekend. He had 11 hits in 14 at-bats, including a double in each contest. He registered a career-high four hits in Saturday's regularly-scheduled game, then equaled that mark on Sunday. In the series opener, suspended Friday and finished Saturday, Honchel had three hits, giving him a team-high 14 multiple-hit games (in 27 outings).
The outfielder and part-time DH drove in four runs (two each on Saturday and Sunday), while scoring six times, and was 1-of-2 in stolen base attempts.
Honchel leads the team in hitting with a .436 average, including a .708 clip in six league games. He joins Kevin Bower (Feb. 17-19) and Shawn Marquardt (February 20-26 and (March 5-11) as previous Miami awardwinners.
