CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Although the entire Miami University men's track and field team doesn't start its outdoor season until next weekend, two RedHawks got their season started on a strong note as senior Jordan Goffena and freshman Sam Chester each competed in the decathlon at the Charlotte 49er Classic Thursday and Friday at UNC-Charlotte's Irwin Belk Track.
Goffena (Sidney, Ohio) won the decathlon with a personal-best total of 7,009 points, topping his previous best of 6,994, while he already ranked fifth in school history in the event. Goffena sat in second after day one (five events) with 3,578 points, trailing K'Vonte Scott of ETSU, who had 3,754 points, but finished strong Friday to earn the win. Goffena's best event was the 110m hurdles, winning the event in 14.73 to earn 882 points, his highest-scoring individual event of the 10. He also won the 400m dash in a personal-best 49.64 to earn 831 points and won the pole vault, clearing 4.40m/14-5.25 for 731 points.
