Marquardt Earns Pitcher of the Week Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Senior Shawn Marquardt has been named Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced today. The Carmel, Ind., native was also selected as MAC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.
Marquardt helped Miami snap a two-game skid in South Carolina by pitching his first career complete game, a 1-0 shutout of Michigan State on Sunday. He etruck out a career-best seven Spartans, while allowing only three hits (two doubles and a ninth-inning single). The left-hander did not walk anyone, facing only 30 batters (three above the minimum) and threw just 98 pitches. Marquardt's previous best was five strikeouts vs. Indiana last April 5, while his longest outing last year was 6.2 innings at Eastern Kentucky.
Other awardwinners for the league were Evan Campbell of Kent State (East Player of the Week) Eastern Michigan's Ben Magsig (West Player of the Week) and Steve Weber (West Pitcher of the Week)
Marquart is the second RedHawk in as many weeks to take a conference award. Kevin Bower was MAC East Player of the Week for Feb. 17-19.
Miami begins its annual spring break trip this weekend with a visit to Ole Miss, which is 6-1 entering tonight's game with Jackson State. The Rebels are ranked 16th by Baseball America and 23rd by Collegiate Baseball.
