NEW ORLEANS - For the sixth straight year, the Miami University men's cross country team has earned All-Academic Team status by the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association as the USTFCCCA announced the recipients from this past fall (2011 season) on Wednesday. The RedHawks have now claimed the honor 16 times in the 18 years it has been given, all coming under head coach Warren Mandrell.
Miami led all Mid-American Conference teams with a 3.40 cumulative team grade-point average while five of the nine MAC schools that sponsor men's cross country earned All-Academic Team honors, as Bowling Green was second with a 3.35 GPA. Not only were the RedHawks tops among all MAC schools but they also had the highest GPA among all Division I schools in the state of Ohio, which includes Cincinnati, Dayton, Ohio State and Wright State, among others, in addition to the MAC schools.
A total of 147 teams were recognized by the USTFCCCA and were named an All-Academic Team while Miami ranked 27th nationally with its 3.40 GPA. The `Hawks improved significantly from last year when the team had a 3.20 GPA. To earn All-Academic Team status, a team must have competed at an NCAA Regional Championship and earned a minimum team cumulative GPA of 3.00.
Three individual RedHawks earned academic honors earlier this year as redshirt junior David Eichenberger, redshirt freshman Daniel Garleb and redshirt sophomore Matt Marol were all named Academic All-MAC with GPAs north of 3.60.
Miami's women's cross country team also earned All-Academic Team honors from the USTFCCCA, as that list was announced Monday.
