DAYTON, Ohio--Junior Jarrod Eick finished first to lead the Miami University men's cross country team to a first-place finish at the Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge on Saturday morning in the RedHawks' season-opening race.
Despite brutally hot conditions, the RedHawks' top five finished first, third, fourth, 10th and 11th to post a team score of 29. Miami finished 11 points better than its nearest competition--Dayton--who tallied 40 points. IUPUI followed with 64 points. Wright State and Morehead State rounded out the Division I field with 106 and 133 points, respectively.
"We ran very well and ran a very intelligent race," said Miami head coach Warren Mandrell. "It was really hot today, probably the hottest it's been when we've run in this meet. The whole team did a good job of being patient because we knew if we went out too hard early it would be bad in this type of heat."
Among the Division I field, Eick led the way with a time of 15:23.4. Sophomore Dave Wing followed closely behind, finishing third in a time of 15:27.7. Junior David Eichenberger clocked a time of 15:35.9 to place fourth, while sophomore Daniel Garleb finished 10th in a time of 16:00.9 and freshman Ryan Moncrieff placed 11th with a time of 16:01.7.
"Jarrod took the lead around the two-mile mark and looked comfortable the whole way," added Mandrell. "David Wing had a nice race and battled it out to finish third."
This is the eighth time in the last nine years Miami has captured this meet.
The RedHawks return to action next weekend when Miami hosts the Miami Open at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 on Miami's Western Campus course.
