CLEVELAND - After winning his second consecutive race to start the 2011 season, Miami University junior cross country runner Jarrod Eick was named Mid-American Conference Men's Runner of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Senior women's cross country runner Kelley Miller earned the honor on the women's side, giving Miami a sweep of the weekly awards.
Eick (Hartville, Ohio) won the Miami Open Saturday, taking first place at Miami's only home meet of the season for the second straight year. He finished in 25:39 in his first 8K race of the year, crossing the line 15 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Eick led Miami to the team title as well for the second straight race, ahead of three other teams, as he beat out a field of 44 runners.
The weekly honor is the second of Eick's career for cross country, also winning the award Sept. 8, 2010 after placing third at the Flyer 5K Challenge. He won MAC Track Athlete of the Week twice last season as well, doing so on March 29 and May 10, 2011. Eick has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week each of the last two weeks after winning the Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge Sept. 3 and the Miami Open on Saturday.
Eick and the RedHawks return to action Saturday, Sept. 24 at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, La. The race is set to start at 10:45 a.m. ET.
