Volleyball Completes Perfect Day with Win Over Eastern Illinois

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Miami volleyball team made it a perfect opening day at the Quality Inn/ASICS Classic Friday with a 3-1 (25-14, 20-25, 25-17, 25-12) victory over Eastern Illinois. The RedHawks improve to 2-0 overall, while the Panthers fall to 0-1. Amy Raseman led Miami with 14 kills, while Madison Hardy had 26 digs.
Miami never trailed in the first set after taking the first four points. Amy Kendall recorded two straight service aces as the RedHawks increased their lead to 10-3. EIU would go on a 7-5 run to close within five at 10-15, but two kills from Raseman, a block by Cassie Farrell and Christina Menche and a service ace by Hardy helped Miami retake control of the set. With the score 21-14, Meg Riley put down a kill off of Kendall's assist and Kendall recorded another service ace. Farrell would then put down two final kills to give the RedHawks a 25-14 victory.
Trailing 10-15 in the second set, kills by Raseman and Farrell would spark a 4-0 run that pulled the RedHawks to within one. However, the Panthers would answer with the next six points to regain control of the set at 20-14. Miami did not give up, as a service ace by Kendall and a kill by Farrell would help get the RedHawks within two at 19-21. Eastern Illinois would then answer with a 4-1 run to take the second set, 25-20.
Three kills by Farrell helped Miami jump to an 8-3 lead over EIU in set three. Farrell continued her strong play when she combined with Lisa Treadway and Riley for three straight blocks as the RedHawks increased their advantage to 13-4. An 8-5 Panther run made it 18-12, but kills from Farrell and Menche, along with several EIU attack errors would give the RedHawks set point at 24-14. Eastern Illinois fought it off for three straight points, but eventually made a service error to give Miami a 25-17 win.
Miami put set four away early by scoring the first five points. Riley had a service ace, while Menche and Raseman each had kills during the run. Jenn Caylor had two kills as the RedHawks increased the advantage to 12-4. EIU would get as close as 10-16, but a service error, followed by a block from Raseman and Kayleigh Cox started a 7-1 run that made it 23-11 in favor of Miami. After a service error gave the Panthers a point, the RedHawks got it right back when Eastern made a service error of its own. Kendall would then record her career-high fifth service ace of the game to give Miami the 25-12 win and a four-set victory.
The RedHawks hit .330 for the match, while holding EIU to a .059 hitting percentage. Farrell recorded 12 kills off of a .476 hitting percentage, and set a new career-high with six block assists. As a team, Miami recorded eight total blocks. Raseman hit. 448 for the match, while Hardy was only three digs off of her career-high. Riley led the way with 27 assists.
Miami completes play at the Quality Inn/ASICS Classic Saturday with two more matches. The RedHawks will take on the host Indiana State Sycamores at noon. They will then face Chicago State at 5 p.m.
