OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami's offensive All-Decade Team is nearly complete, but a key position--perhaps one of the most symbolic--still remains: the 12th man. After careful consideration, the fans have selected former Miami quarterback Mike Bath.
Bath played for Miami from 1998-2000, serving as the team captain in 2000. His record-breaking performances helped him earn team Most Valuable Player that the same year. During that season, he served as a mentor for then red-shirted freshman quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
Throughout the many scouting reports on Bath, coaches cited his intangibles, such as leadership, as some of the greatest they had ever seen.
During Bath's first season in 1998, he played in all 11 games, then never missed a start during the next three years. Bath's first career start was one for the ages as he led the `Hawks to an upset of 12th-ranked North Carolina. His breakout season was in 1999 when he threw for 2,525 yards and 24 touchdowns, good enough for fourth and sixth place, respectively, in Miami history.
Bath's career total offense of 7,010 yards and 49 passing touchdowns stand as the third-best marks in the long history of the RedHawks. He was the first Miami quarterback ever to surpass 6,000 yards in career passing.
After graduation, Bath stayed with his Miami family. In 2004 and 2005 he served as a graduate assistant, then became a fulltime assistant coach under Shane Montgomery from 2006 to 2008. Today, Bath is entering his first season as an assistant under head coach Don Treadwell.
