Tennis Tops Western Michigan, 6-1

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- In a battle of teams that have combined for the last six Mid-American Conference tennis titles, Miami cruised to a 6-1 victory over Western Michigan Saturday afternoon. The win was the 21st straight in regular-season league play for the RedHawks (12-5, 4-0).

Miami, which is the two-time defending MAC Champions, jumped out to an early lead by winning the doubles point for the fifth straight match. Riekie Honiball and Jessica Parr starting things off with an 8-3 win at No. 2. It was the eighth straight win for the duo, which improved to 10-2 this season. Cara Wald and Anastasia Dracheva followed with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 to put Miami up 1-0. However, Stephanie Danesis and Megan Martzolf, ranked 78th in the last Campbell's/ITA Rankings, were upset 9-7 at No. 1. They had led 6-3 before April Kerr and Nini Sujashvili rallied. ee Marzolf quickly dispatched her opponent at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0, to put Miami up 2-0, then Dracheva earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2.

After Western Michigan won in the No. 6 flight, Nimisha Mohan clinched the win for the RedHawks. Playing No. 4 for the first time since Feb. 5, she posted a 6-4, 6-3 win for an insurrmountable 4-1 lead.

Miami finished off the win when Danesis won 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 1 and Honiball took a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 triumph at No. 5.

The RedHawks return to action next Saturday when it travels to Northern Illinois.
