Select RedHawks Open Outdoor Season at 49er Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Although the majority of the Miami University men's track and field team does not open its 2011 outdoor season until next weekend (March 25-26), four RedHawks competed Friday and Saturday in the Charlotte 49er Classic at UNC-Charlotte's Irwin Belk Track.
Senior Michael McCarty (Hudson, Ohio) was the runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 7.06m/23-2, but was the top collegiate finisher, trailing only George Fields, who competed unattached. McCarty beat out East Tennessee State's Ryan Beaver by four inches while also topping jumpers from Western Carolina, Pittsburgh and the host 49ers.
In the decathlon, three RedHawks finished in the top 10, including two in the top four. Junior transfer Jordan Goffena (Sidney, Ohio) placed second with a total of 6,305 points, but like McCarty, was the top collegiate finisher, trailing only unattached Jake Wainwright, who totaled 6,588 points. Goffena posted a personal-best in the javelin portion of the decathlon with a toss of 43.38m/142-4 while taking first in the shot put.
Redshirt junior Matt Rudin (Middleburgh Heights, Ohio) was the third collegiate finisher in the decathlon and fourth overall, with West Virginia's Cuylor Edgell placing between Goffena and Rudin. Rudin totaled 6,189 points while setting personal bests in the 400m (52.70), 1500m (4:54.47) and the discus (31.81m/104-4) and also placed first in the javelin (55.24m/181-2). Freshman Taylor Celestin (Mason, Ohio) finished 10th in the decathlon with a score of 5,582 points.
The entire RedHawk squad begins their outdoor season March 25-26 at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold meet in Nashville, Tenn.
