RedHawks Suffer First Setback in 2011

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Megan Martzolf won her 28th straight dual match dating back to last year and Stephanie Danesis stayed undefeated in 2011, but Miami suffered its first setback, 5-2 at 30th-ranked Iowa.
The Hawkeyes got off to a quick start as Jessica Cohen and Christina Harazin swept past Anastasia Dracheva and Nimisha Mohan 8-0 at No. 3. The RedHawks (4-1) went into an early 1-0 hole when Riekie Honiball and Cara Wald fell 8-1 at No. 2. The best match was at No. 1 doubles where Danesis and Martzolf battled Sonja Molnar and Jessica Young to a 5-4 score on serve before the Hawkeyes won three straight for an 8-4 victory.
Singles play was much tighter across the board, although Iowa won of the six matches. Wald dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 6, then the Hawkeyes opened a 3-0 lead when No. 5 Honiball fell 6-4, 6-1. Iowa officially locked up the win when Mohan suffered her first loss of the year, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3. Dracheva also suffered her first setback of the season,, falling 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1
Miami avoided the shutout when Martzolf won her 28th straight match dating back to last year. She defeated Lynne Poggensee-Wei, her opponent in the No. 3 flight, 6-1, 6-4, to make the score 5-1. Danesis closed out play with a three-set victory at No. 2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. In the first set, she broke on her first opportunity, then broke again in the final game. After falling in the second, she rebounded from a 3-2 deficit, then snapped a 4-4 tie by holding serve and breaking.
Miami returns to action tomorrow when it faces Kansas State in a neutral site match. The Wildcats are 2-0 on the season so far.
