DETROIT, Mich. -- Miami earned a split of a rare tennis doubleheader Sunday, topping Detroit 7-0 this evening after falling to Michigan State 6-1 in the morning. The win over the Titans snapped a three-game losing streak for the RedHawks, who stand 5-3 overall.
Miami lacked enough depth in the early match to compete with the Spartans because of a injury to No. 4 Nimisha Mohan. The RedHawks' duo of Stephanie Danesis and Megan Martzolf improved to 7-1 with an 8-2 win at No. 1, but Michigan State earned the point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. The Spartans won five of six singles matches, with Anastasia Dracheva posting the only win of the match at No. 2, 6-3, 7-5, over Valentia Rusakova.
In the evening, Miami earned its third sweep of a match this year, but captured every one of the matches played for the first time. Martzolf and Danesis cruised to an 8-2 win, while Riekie Honiball and Jessica Parr earned an 8-6 decision at No. 3. In the middle match, the newly-created duo of Dracheva and Cara Wald posted an 8-5 victory, the first at the position all year.
The singles matches were fairly lopsided with Martzolf (No. 3) and Wald (No. 5) sweeping their opponents and Honiball (No. 4) and Dracheva (No. 2) losing just one game. Danesis had to go to a third set for a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 1, while Parr earned her first career dual-match win, rallying 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6).
"I was proud of the way we fought back this evening at every single spot," Head Coach Anca Dumitrescu said. "We got the job done. I was pleased with the way Jess came out and in her first match of the spring forced a third set, then won the match. She also helped us get the doubles point. We competed well in the evening match."
Miami returns to action next weekend with a Saturday match at Kentucky.
