Miami's RACHEL PATTERSON (track and field)
Rachel Patterson (R-Jr., 3.77, exercise science) ran to a runner-up finish in the 5000m run Friday at the Meyo Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame, as she clocked in at a season-best 16:43.49, just three seconds off her school-record time that she set last year. It is the second-best 5K time in school history and is the top time in the MAC in the event this year. Her mark is also the 16th-best time in the country so far this season. Patterson was competing in a field of 53 runners, which included athletes from Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Illinois, Louisville, Alabama, and Notre Dame to name a few while also running against girls from MAC foes Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Bowling Green, Kent State and Ball State.
Miami's John Eick (swimming & Diving)
John Eick (Sr., 3.86, zoology) led Miami to a dual meet victory over Ball State Saturday as he took first place in the 50 yard freestyle in 21.79, winning by 0.3 of a second. He also helped Miami take third in the 200 free relay, as he swam the anchor leg on a team that clocked in at 1:26.32. Eick again took third in the 400 yard medley relay, as he swam the third leg on a team that finished in 3:36.54.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
