Miami at Kent State
October 15, 2011 - Dix Stadium - Kent, Ohio
Series/General Notes
- Miami now leads the all-time series 46-13, including 24-6 at Kent. Last year, the RedHawks earned a 27-21 victory, snapping a two-game slide. Since 2002, Miami is 7-3 against the Golden Flashes.
- Two members of Miami's 2011 coaching staff were on Kent State's staff last year. Defensive Coordinator Pete Rekstis held the same position with the Flashes, while Miami alum and defensive ends coach Matt Edwards led KSU's defensive line in 2010.
- Chris Givens was Miami's game captain against Kent State. He joined season-long captains Zac Dysert and Anthony Kokal. Kent State won the toss and deferred.
Team Notes
- The victory was the first in MAC play for first-year head coach Don Treadwell.
- Miami trailed Kent State 3-0 at the half, the sixth straight game that the RedHawks have been behind after 30 minutes. Miami was held scoreless at intermission in three of the contests.
- Miami registered a safety in the fourth quarter, making the score 9-3. It was the first safety for the RedHawks since Oct. 13, 2007, when they blocked a Bowling Green punt out of the endzone.
Individual Notes
- Quarterback Zac Dysert had 125 yards passing, his lowest total of the year, but threw a touchdown in the third quarter. It was his 32nd career scoring throw. Dysert fell just short of passing Mike Bath for third on the all-time Miami yardage list. He has 6,520 yards in his career, four behind the current Miami assistant coach (6,524 from 1997-2000).
- Nick Harwell was unsuccessful in his attempt to record a school-record fifth straight game with 100 yards receiving. He entered the game tied with Martin Nance (start of the 2005 season) as the only players with four. Harwell finished the day with one yard on three catches. After missing the first game for disciplinary reasons, he had 162 yards at Minnesota, 139 vs. Bowling Green, 149 vs. Cincinnati and 186 (third-most in school history) against Army.
- Erik Finklea finished the day with 68 yards rushing, his third-best effort of the year. The majority of his total came in the fourth quarter when he had 55 of those yards. Finklea had 71 yards at Missouri and 90 vs. Army.
- Zac Murphy had his longest punt of the season, covering 55 yards late in the first quarter. His previous best was 54 yards against Army last week. The kick Saturday was his third over 50 yards this season and the seventh in his career. Murphy also had a three of kicks inside the 20, including one that rolled to the 1-yard line.
- Chris Givens moved into eighth place on Miami's career receiving yards list with his 16-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter. He passed Jason Branch (1,611 from 1999-2002) and Tremayne Banks (1,622 from 1993-96) on the play. Givens finished the game with three catches for 47 yards, leaving him one short of the top 10 for receptions.
- Sophomore Demetrius Quarles registered his first career interception at the end of the first half. He picked off a Hail Mary attempt in the endzone on the final play. The RedHawks have five interceptions on the year.
