Cincinnati at Miami
Oct. 1, 2011 - Yager Stadium - Oxford, Ohio
Series/General Notes
- Miami suffered its sixth straight loss to Cincinnati Saturday, but still leads the all-time series 59-50-7, including 14-9-2 in Oxford. It was the first time Miami had been shut out by the Bearcats since Sept. 25, 1976 when UC won, 17-0.
- The RedHawks were shut out Saturday by anyone for the first time since Sept. 12, 2009 at Boise State, a 48-0 defeat. It was the first time Miami has been blanked in Yager Stadium since Oct. 29, 1983, a 17-0 loss to Northern Illinois. Yager Stadium opened in 1983, making Saturday just the second time in stadium history Miami has been held scoreless.
Team Notes
- The teams played to a scoreless first quarter. Prior to Saturday's contest, Cincinnati had racked up 72 points in the opening 15 minutes in four games while giving up just 14, having pitched a shutout in the first quarter for the fourth time this year Saturday. Miami, on the other hand, had been outscored 16-3 in the first quarter in 2011 with the lone field goal coming at Minnesota Sept. 17. The RedHawks played two scoreless first quarters where neither side scored last year (at Central Michigan Oct. 16 and at Akron Nov. 17).
- Miami entered Saturday's game with just one fumble recovery in three games on the year but fell on two fumbles in the second quarter. Redshirt junior defensive lineman Jason Semmes made his first career fumble recovery early in the second quarter, falling on the ball at Miami's own 12-yard line. Later in the second quarter, redshirt junior cornerback D.J. Brown fell on a muffed punt at the Miami 46-yard line. It was Brown's second career fumble recovery, also recovering one in 2010.
- At halftime, Cincinnati led 6-0. Miami has held scoreless in the first half for the first time since playing at Northwestern on Oct. 10, 2009. The Bearcats were averaging 33.5 points in the first half entering Saturday and were held to six points by the RedHawks. The six points were also the fewest UC has scored in any half this year with its previous low being nine points in the second half at Tennessee Sept. 10.
- Sophomore wide receiver Nick Harwell hauled in a 66-yard pass early in the third quarter from redshirt junior quarterback Zac Dysert, which tied Miami's longest reception of the year, also from Dysert to Harwell at Minnesota Sept. 17. The two long completions are Miami's second-longest plays of the year behind a 72-yard kick return from sophomore Dayonne Nunley against Bowling Green last Saturday.
- The RedHawks were held to -3 rushing yards Saturday, the first time Miami has been held to negative rushing yards since Oct. 24, 2009 when Northern Illinois limited Miami to -11 rushing yards.
Individual Notes
- Redshirt junior quarterback Zac Dysert threw for 252 yards Saturday, giving him 6,053 passing yards for his career, which moves him into fourth on Miami's career passing yardage list. He passed Sam Ricketts (1994-97), who had 5,870 passing yards in his career. Mike Bath, Miami's current tight ends/receivers coach, ranks third in Miami history with 6,524 passing yards from 1997-00.
- Sophomore wide receiver Nick Harwell finished Saturday's game with a game-high 149 receiving yards on six catches for his third straight 100-yard receiving game (the only three games he's played this year), going for 139 yards on eight catches last week vs. Bowling Green and 162 yards on 12 catches at Minnesota (Sept. 17). It was his fifth-career 100-yard receiving game, also topping the 100-yard mark at Bowling Green last year (Nov. 10) and when he had a school-record 219 yards vs. Ohio last year (Oct. 23). Harwell became just the second player in school history to record at least three straight 100-yard receiving games (Martin Nance did it twice, once in 2003 and once in 2005). Harwell now ranks sixth in Miami history for the most 100-yard receiving games with five, needing one more to tie Trevor Gaylor for fifth with six 100-yard games. If Harwell tops 100 yards next week vs. Army, he would tie Nance's mark of four-straight 100-yard receiving games that he set in 2005.
- Sophomore cornerback Dayonne Nunley made his second interception of the season and eighth of his career Saturday, picking off Cincinnati in the end zone in the fourth quarter. His eight picks have come in just 18 career games, with his other interception of the year coming in the season opener at Missouri Sept. 3. He needs two more interceptions to crack Miami's career top 10.
- Senior linebacker Ryan Kennedy snagged his first career interception midway through the first quarter Saturday. He picked off a UC pass in the end zone, which prevented the Bearcats from scoring.
- Redshirt junior linebacker Jaytee Swanson recorded a career-best seven tackles Saturday, which led Miami. He entered the game with just nine tackles on the year and had just 11 all of last season.
- Freshman defensive back Chrishawn Dupuy played in his first game Saturday, on the offensive side of the ball no less, and made his first career catch early in the second quarter for a two-yard gain. He finished the game with six catches for 31 yards and also rushed five times for 15 yards, which were his first career carries.
- Senior safety Anthony Kokal punted seven times for 226 yards for Miami Saturday, his first time punting in his career. He averaged 32.3 yards per punt, including a long of 61 yards in the third quarter, which was Miami's longest punt of the year.
- Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jake Wurzelbacher made his first career reception Saturday for a gain of 10 yards in the fourth quarter from redshirt sophomore quarterback Austin Boucher, who saw his first action of the season.
