CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Miami rebounded from a double loss to win five of six in singles to claim a 5-2 victory over Cincinnati Friday night at the Western Hills Tennis Club.
The RedHawks dropped a point for the first time this season, losing two of the three double matches. Stephanie Danesis and Megan Martzolf cruised to an 8-2 victory at No. 1, but Anastasia Dracheva and Nimisha Mohan lost 8-3 at No. 3.
The deciding match started in Miami's favor as Riekie Honiball and Cara Wald opened a 2-0 lead, but then dropped the next two. The teams held serve until 6-6 when Honiball was broken in a game that featured four deuces. Lindsey Lonergan and Catlin O'Gara then held for an 8-6 victory that put the Bearcats up 1-0.
Miami quickly took a 2-1 lead as Martzolf won 6-3, 6-1 at No.3 and Mohan cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5. O'Gara pulled UC even at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Honiball, but the RedHawks clinched the victory shortly after. Wald made the final score 5-2 by fighting through a tough three-setter, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
"Today we were challenged by Cincinnati, who came out very hard," Head Coach Anca Dumitrescu said. "They fought really hard throughout the match. I was proud of how we stepped up in singles. We played the important points very well today."
With the victory, the 2011 RedHawks became just the fourth team in school history to open the season 3-0. They will try to become the first team ever to win four straight tomorrow afternoon at Butler.
