OXFORD, Ohio - Former Miami University football players Mike Bath and Matt Edwards have been named assistant coaches, Head Coach Don Treadwell announced today. Bath will work with the tight ends, while Edwards will serve as defensive ends coach.
"One of the overriding goals was to bring Miami men back to the program," Treadwell said. "I have never worked with Mike, but as I got to know him, it was like `Wow, he would be a good fit for our staff. Matt was a tremendous player and a captain. To have him back heightens the awareness of the rich tradition of Miami Football for our current players."
Bath, who previous held the position of offensive coordinator at Ashland, begins his second stint as a RedHawk assistant, having served as tight ends coach from 2006-08. Prior to being elevated to full-time status, he served as a graduate assistant for two seasons, one on each side of the ball. In 2005, Bath worked on offensive game plans and assisted with the quarterbacks, helping Miami to passing offense rankings of No. 1 in the MAC and 15th nationally. A year earlier, he helped the defensive unit rank second in the MAC in scoring defense and in the top 30 nationally in rushing defense.
As the quarterback of the RedHawks from 1998-2000, Bath posted a record of 23-10 under center, including a 10-1 mark as a sophomore. He posted then-Miami career records of 6,524 yards passing and 49 TDs. Bath also saw time in the Arena Football League 2 in 2002-03 with the Charleston SwampFoxes and the Mohegan Wolves.
A double major at Miami, Bath earned bachelor's degrees in both marketing and organizational behavior in 2001. He and his wife Tara have a son, Colton, and a daughter, Savannah.
Edwards returns to his alma mater after eight seasons at MAC rival Kent State. He served as a graduate assistant from 2004-06, when he was elevated to defensive line coach. While with the Golden Flashes, Edwards worked under the direction of Miami defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis.
This past season, Edwards tutored Roosevelt Nix, who was named MAC Defensive Player of the Year, MAC Freshman of the Year and a Freshman All-America choice. Three other Kent State players earned All-MAC honors under Edward's watch -- Danny Muir (now a starter for the Indianapolis Colts), Colin Ferrell (also with the Colts) and Monte Simmons. The Golden Flash defense set a new single-season school record for sacks in 2010.
Edwards began his coaching career in 2003 as the linebackers coach at the College of Wooster.
As a player, the West Chester native started at linebacker as a true freshman, helping Randy Walker's squad to a 10-1 record and win over 13th-ranked North Carolina. After a string of injuries, he moved to defensive end, where he posted the third-best single season sack total (team-high 10) in 2002. He also served as a team captain as a senior.
Edwards earned his bachelor's degree in sport organization in December, 2002. He and his wife, Mary, have a son, Andrew, and are expecting another child in May.
