Miami Football Team Prepares for Kent State

Miami University's football team looks to stay unbeaten in Mid-American Conference play this Saturday (Oct. 2) when it entertains the Kent State Golden Flashes at Yager Stadium.
Coach Michael Haywood'S RedHawks are 1-0 in the MAC, while Kent State plays its first league game of 2010.

KENT STATE HEAD COACH DOUG MARTIN (Kentucky, `85) is in his seventh season guiding the Golden Flashes and owns a 25-48 overall record at the helm of the program. Martin has a record of 17-31 in Mid-American Conference games.

Miami has 75 first downs, six more than its competition, and is averaging 4.5 yards per play. Miami's 84 total points through the first four games of 2010 are 39 more than it scored in a similar span last season.
6. Defensive coordinator CARL "BULL" REESE saw his team falter against Missouri, but the RedHawks' defensive unit has taken great strides overall in 2010. Miami ranks 23rd, nationally, in rushing defense (100.5 ypg) and 43rd in total defense (327.3). MU is tied for 15th in red zone effi cency as its opponents have scored just nine times in 14 tries inside the 20-yard line. The RedHawks rank 47th in first downs allowed (17.3 per game).
PREVIEWING KENT STATE: Following a season-opening victory over Murray State (41-10), the Golden Flashes have lost consecutive road games at Boston College (26- 13) and at No. 22 Penn State (24-0). Quarterback Spencer Keith has completed nearly 63 percent of his passes for 646 yards and four touchdowns. He ranks 17th in the nation in passing yardage. Keith's key receivers have been Sam Kirkland (16-187 yards), Tyshon Goode (13-97) and Jacquise Terry (9-142). In the absence of KSU great Eugene Jarvis, Terry leads the team in rushing. Jarvis could see playing time against Miami this Saturday. Defensively, Kent State is particularly stingy against the run, topping all NCAA teams by allowing only 61.3 yards per game. The Flashes rank No. 22, nationally, in total defense.
