OXFORD, Ohio - Hosting a home meet for the first time since 2006, the Miami University men's cross country put on a strong show for its home fans as five RedHawks finished in the top six to win the Miami Invitational Saturday morning at Miami's Western Campus.
Sophomore Jarrod Eick (Hartville, Ohio) led the way for the second straight meet, as he claimed his first collegiate individual title, winning the race in an 8K personal-best time of 25:38. Senior Michael Perry (Cincinnati, Ohio) crossed the finish line a second later in second place.
Redshirt freshman Matt Marol (Evanston, Ill.) placed fourth in 25:41 while redshirt sophomore David Eichenberger (Plainfield, Ind.) and senior Robbie Fisher (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) rounded out Miami's scoring five in fifth and sixth place, respectively, both with times of 25:42. Miami's top five runners ran as the lead pack for much of the race until sprinting down the final straightaway. Evansville's Ryan Witters was lone non-RedHawk in the top six, as he took third.
Miami finished with 18 points to win its second straight meet after taking the season-opening Flyer 5K Challenge title last Saturday at Dayton. Cedarville took second place with 52 points at the Miami Invitational while Evansville was third with 73 and Urbana finished in fourth with 120 points at the four-team meet.
Redshirt freshman Blake Dircksen (Noblesville, Ind.) was Miami's sixth finisher in ninth place while redshirt junior Chris Dennison (Aurora, Ohio) was the seventh RedHawk to finish in 11th place.
Miami University President David Hodge opened the race by firing the starting gun.
Miami returns to action Friday, Sept. 17 at the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State.
