The 2010 football season gets underway Saturday when the Miami RedHawks travel to Gainesville, Fla., to face the No. 3/4 Florida Gators. ESPN will televise the noon game live from The Swamp with Dave Pasch, Bob Griese and Chris Spielman calling the action.
THE COACHES
MIAMI HEAD COACH Michael Haywood (Notre Dame, `86) begins his second season at the helm of the Miami program ... 1-11 overall record ... served as Fighting Irish offensive coordinator the previous four seasons ... named NCAA Division I-A Assistant Coach of the Year in 2005 by the American Football Coaches Association.
FLORIDA HEAD COACH URBAN MEYER (Cincinnati, `86) is in his sixth season guiding the Gators and owns a 57-10 overall record at the helm of the program ... Meyer is 96-18 in nine years as a head coach with previous stops at Bowling Green and Utah.
QUICK HITS
- Miami has opened its last two seasons against SEC teams, losing last year in Cincinnati to Kentucky (42-0) and in 2008 vs. Vanderbilt (34-13). Saturday's opponent, No. 3/4 Florida, is believed to be the highest-ranked opponent Miami has ever played.
- Miami is 1-0 in its all-time series against Florida, having defeated the Gators by a score of 16-7 in the 1973 Tangerine Bowl. Bill Mallory, the coach of the `73 Miami team, will be a special guest of Coach Michael Haywood on the trip to Gainesville. Mallory is expected to speak to the RedHawk team Friday night.
- Sophomore Zac Dysert, acknowledged by most as the Mid-American Conference's premier quarterback in 2010, threw for 2,611 yards during his first season a year ago. His seven primary targets are wide receivers Armand Robinson, Jamal Rogers, Chris Givens, ANDY CRUSE, Luke Swift, Nick Harwell and DeMarco Paine.
