Volleyball and field hockey opened their seasons last weekend, soccer enjoyed its second week of competition, while football, women's cross country and men's cross country get underway this weekend.

Congratulations to junior midfielder Sarah Dessfelt, who was tabbed Co-Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week after she helped power Miami soccer to a record-setting 15-0 win over Alabama A&M on Aug. 21. After not scoring a goal in her first two years at Miami, the junior recorded a hat trick and also handed out an assist in the win. (RELEASE) Miami continued its winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Chattanooga on Friday at the Lady Govs Invitational. Senior Brooke Livingston headed home the game-winning goal for the RedHawks (3-0), less than a minute after Chattanooga had evened the match.(RECAP) Miami took a 2-0 lead against Western Illinois on Sunday and went on to post a 2-1 win to round out its stint at the tournament. (RECAP) The RedHawks travel to Butler for a 5 p.m. game on Friday before heading to Chicago for a 4 p.m. (EDT) game at DePaul on Sunday.
Field hockey (2-0) got off to a strong start with an impressive 4-3 come-from-behind win at California on Friday evening. The RedHawks scored three unanswered goals to evaporate a two-goal deficit en route to the win. Senior Christine Brightwell scored the game winner with seven minutes remaining off a penalty corner. (RECAP) The RedHawks came back with a dominant 8-0 win over Pacific on Sunday. Mary Hull, Kate Snyder and Jackie Nguyen each scored two goals for the RedHawks. (RECAP) Miami faces UC Davis Monday at 3 p.m. (EDT) to round out its trip to the West Coast and heads to Iowa this weekend to face Brown in a neutral-site game on Saturday and host Iowa on Sunday.

Head Volleyball Coach Carolyn Condit reached a milestone over the weekend. In Saturday's match against Memphis, Condit coached her 1,000th career match as a head coach. She is only the 10th volleyball coach in NCAA history to reach that mark while coaching exclusively in Division I. Miami went 1-2 at the Belmont Invitational, sweeping Jacksonville State (RECAP) and falling to host Belmont, 0-3, (RECAP) and Memphis, 1-3. (RECAP) The RedHawks play in the Kentucky Classic this weekend, facing host No. 14 Kentucky on Friday and Ohio State and USF on Saturday.

Football opens its season this weekend at No. 3 Florida at noon Saturday. The game will be televised on ESPN. Congratulations to senior safety Jordan Gafford, senior offensive lineman Bob Gulley, sophomore quarterback Zac Dysert and sophomore defensive lineman Austin Brown for being voted as team captains for the 2010 season. Also in action this weekend are the women's cross country team and the men's cross country team. Both are competing at the Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge with the men's team scheduled to run at 10:45 a.m. and the women's team to follow at 11:15 a.m.
Women's basketball announced its 2010-11 schedule, which features 13 home games and 11 games against teams that reached the postseason a year ago. The RedHawks open the season at home on Nov. 14.
