The 2010-11 athletic campaign got off to an impressive start last week.
The women's soccer team (1-0) came out in dominating fashion, downing Alabama A&M, 15-0, Saturday evening in the season opener for both teams. The 15 scores shattered the school record for goals in a game, nearly doubling the previous mark of eight, which was achieved multiple times, including the 2009 regular-season finale - an 8-0 win over Ball State. Junior midfielder Sarah Dessfelt, who had recorded no points in her career previously, recorded a hat trick and added an assist, while freshmen Morgan Stallard and Sam Whitmore each tallied hat tricks of their own in their first collegiate competition. (RECAP) The team followed with a 1-1 tie in an exhibition game on Sunday against North London Soccer Club. (RECAP) The 'Hawks resume regular-season play Friday, Aug. 27 against Chattanooga at 9 p.m. (EDT) in the Lady Govs Invitational in Clarksville, Tenn. Miami rounds out the tournament against Western Illinois on Sunday at noon.
Football continued its preparations for the 2010 season on Saturday with an hour-long scrimmage at Yager Stadium. The workout was part of the annual Pigskin Preview, which include a players' autograph session and a cookout with the fans. (RECAP) The RedHawks take the field at No. 3 Florida to open the season. In a tune up for its season opener this week, the field hockey team traveled to Indiana for an exhibition last Wednesday. The teams played three 25 minute periods, one 10 minute 7-on-7 overtime period and concluded with a penalty stroke contest. After dropping the first frame, 3-1, Miami tied the Hoosiers 1-1 in the second period and 2-2 in the third period. The two teams went scoreless in the overtime frame, while the RedHawks won the penalty stroke competition, 3-0. Senior Christine Brightwell led the RedHawk offense with two goals. Senior Kate Snyder and junior Amanda Seeley each also scored during the scrimmage. (RECAP) Miami begins the regular season on Friday, Aug. 27 when it travels to Berkeley, Calif., to take on the Cal Golden Bears at 8 p.m. (EDT). While they are on the West Coast, Miami also faces Pacific at 3 p.m. Sunday and UC Davis at 3 p.m. next Monday.
Senior golfer Michael Drobnick qualified for the U.S. Amateur Tournament with a runner-up performance in a local qualifier in Cleveland. Drobnick travels to the Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash., to participate in the U.S. Amateur Aug. 23-29. (RELEASE)
Miami was one of only 96 NCAA Division I volleyball teams (both men and women) to earn an American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award. In fact, the team's 3.56 GPA ranked 13th overall in the entire nation. As part of the RedHawks' impressive academic performance was a stellar spring semester cumulative GPA of 3.70. Not only was it the highest GPA for any Miami team during the previous school year, it is believed to be the highest single-semester cumulative GPA achieved in school history. (RELEASE) The RedHawks open the 2010 season with a tournament at Belmont Aug. 27-28. The RedHawks will face the host Bruins on Friday, Aug. 27 at 4 p.m., before taking on Jacksonville State and Memphis on Saturday.
One of just 73 teams nationwide and the only squad from the Mid-American Conference, the Miami University men's track and field was tabbed a 2010 Division I All-Academic Team by the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association. The RedHawks compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.02, which tied for 66th in the nation among all Division I men's track and field teams. (RELEASE) John Gausmann was named to the Men's Division I USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for earning a cumulative GPA above 3.25 and qualifying for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds. (RELEASE)
The women's track and field team was recognized for its work in the classroom, as the RedHawks were named an All-Academic Team by the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association. Miami has earned the distinction each of the last six years and eight of the last nine seasons. A total of 151 women's Division I track and field programs were honored by the USTFCCCA for earning a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or better, including eight Mid-American Conference schools, which tied for second-most among Division I conferences. The RedHawks posted a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.26. (RELEASE) Individually, Amanda Mirochna, Nicki Mitchell and Rachel Patterson were named to the 2010 USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic Track & Field Team for earning a cumulative GPA above 3.25 and qualifying for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds outdoors or earning a NCAA provisional qualifying score during the indoor season. Five Miami women swimmers competed at the 2010 ConocoPhillips National Championships in Irvine, Calif. The club meet featured the nation's best swimmers, including numerous Olympians. Seniors Kelsey Vehr, Megan Brunn, Nicole Roddenbery and sophomores Maegan O'Connor and Leah Thornton participated in the event. Vehr led the way with a 23rd-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke and was eighth among college-age swimmers. She also finished 32nd in the 200-yard breaststroke. (RELEASE)
Men's basketball announced its 2010-11 schedule, which features a program record 16 home games this season. The RedHawks open the season at home on Nov. 12 against Towson and also host local foes Xavier and Cincinnati in December. Five student-athletes earned Miami University Athletics' most prestigious annual awards and will be honored at the Miami versus Kent State football game on Saturday, Oct. 2. Nathan Sutherland (men's golf) was named the Male Athlete of the Year, while Kelsey Vehr (women's swimming and diving) seized Female Athlete of the Year honors for a second straight year. Kelsey McHugh (women's cross country/track and field) was named the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Paul Krebs (men's cross country/track and field) captured Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades. Alicia Hogl (softball) earned Miami's highest honor for a female student-athlete, the Leann Grimes Davidge Memorial Award. (RELEASE)
