OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami continued its preparations for the 2010 season on Saturday with an hour-long scrimmage at Yager Stadium. The workout was part of the annual Pigskin Preview, which include a players' autograph session and a cookout with the fans.
Unlike last week's first scrimmage, the offense seemed to hit mid-season form, executing a crisp passing attack during the first few periods. During the second possession, sophomore quarterback Zac Dysert completed a 24-yard pass to Danny Green, then followed by hitting a wide-open Armand Robinson for a 36-yard score.
On the next sequence, Dysert converted three big plays. He connected with Robinson again for 32 yards and later found DeMarco Paine open at the 4 for 17 yards. Two plays, later Chris Givens completed the drive by catching a slant pass for a touchdown.
Later in the scrimmage, the defense picked up its effort, forcing four turnovers. Junior Anthony Kokal and true freshman Dayonne Nunley each made picks, while there were also a pair of fumble recoveries.
"Today was totally different," Head Coach Mike Haywood admitted. "The defense has dominated camp, but today we didn't. We weren't dangerous up front today. Before we can turn Miami back to its history, we have to be a dangerous, relentless team. Conversely, the offense played a lot better today. I am concerned about the turnovers, though. This is something that we will address in practice and make sure we get corrected."
The RedHawks return to the actual practice field on Tuesday after Sunday meetings and a day off Monday for the start of classes. The season opener is two weeks away when Miami travels to Gainesville, Fla. to face the third-ranked Florida Gators.
