OXFORD, Ohio -- The Miami RedHawks hit the Yager Stadium turf for the first time on Saturday with a morning scrimmage that wrapped up the first week of preseason practice. The workout included periods of first-teamers against each other and second-teamers against each other. The freshman also took part in a limited scrimmage situation.
The defense starred during the day, keeping the offense scoreless in each of the first two sessions. Quarterback Zac Dysert set up the first points of the day in the third period with a 26-yard pass to Steve Marck, putting the offense in position for a 34-yard Trevor Cook field goal. But that was the only scoring of the day. The defense forced just one turnover, a Will Diaz interception after Anthony Shoemaker batted the ball at the line of scrimmage.
The scrimmage concluded with several two-minute situations featuring both units. Dysert connected with Luke Swift for a 35-yard scoring strike for the only scoring there.
"I am encouraged with the defense," Head Coach Michael Haywood said. "Every day, we have 11 players ready to go. They are significant strides ahead of the offense at this time. Usually, the offense is behind, but we have to pick it up up front. Our line has to recognize fronts better, running backs have to step up and protect and receivers have to run better routes."
The RedHawks return to the practice field tomorrow afternoon for regular workouts. Next Saturday, the team will be back at Yager Stadium for the annual Pigskin Preview beginning at 10 a.m. Following another scrimmage, the players will be available for autographs before eating lunch with the fans.
