RedHawks Run Away with Miami Invitational Title

OXFORD, Ohio - Hosting the first of two meets in 2010, the Miami University men's track and field team looked right at home, winning the 25th annual Miami Invitational by nearly 100 points Saturday at George Rider Track. The RedHawks earned seven event victories, led by three from junior Michael McCarty (Hudson, Ohio).
Miami totaled 201.5 points while Tiffin finished second with 109 points, Hillsdale was third (82 points) and Grand Valley State placed fourth (66.5 points) among the 17-team field. Local rival Xavier and Butler tied for sixth while other local rivals Dayton (10th) and Wright State (15th) also competed at the meet.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Miami took the top three spots and also placed sixth for 27 points in the event, led by a first-place finish from McCarty in a personal-best 14.45 seconds, which ranks him eighth all-time at Miami. Freshmen Tyler Nichols (South Euclid, Ohio) and Reggie Mitchell (Cincinnati, Ohio) placed second and third, respectively, in 15.03 (a lifetime best) and 15.43. McCarty also won the 400-meter hurdles in 53.68.
The 'Hawks took the top two spots in the 3000m steeplechase, as senior Ryan Dezso (Copley, Ohio) won in 9:23.75 while junior Robbie Fisher (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) was the runner-up in a personal-best 9:25.35. Sophomore Brett Wagner (Toledo, Ohio) placed sixth in the event, also in a personal-best time of 9:53.48, giving the 'Hawks 21 points in the race.
Freshman Jack Spilman (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) won the 800 meters in a personal-best time of 1:54.61 to earn 10 points while fellow freshman Jarrod Eick (Hartville, Ohio) placed sixth (1:57.05). Eick also grabbed eighth place in the 1500m in a personal-best mark of 3:56.78.
In the 5000m, junior Michael Perry (Cincinnati, Ohio) was the runner-up in a personal-best clocking of 14:39.29 while senior Paul Krebs (Kettering, Ohio) crossed in sixth in 14:52.97 to give Miami another 11 points.
Junior Justinn Eddie (Cleveland, Ohio) placed third in the 100-meter dash in a season-best 10.97 while fellow junior Josh Rees (Marysville, Ohio) finished seventh (11.15), as the duo combined for eight points, while Eddie and freshman Alieu Sillah (Richmond, Va.) picked up another nine points in the 200-meter dash, taking fourth (22.24) and fifth (personal-best 22.43), respectively. Sillah also snagged fifth in the 400-meter dash in a Miami season-best 49.83.
Eddie, Sillah and Spilman teamed up with redshirt sophomore Dan Hull (Warren, Ohio) to win the 4x400m relay in a season-best 3:19.00 while Eddie, Sillah and Rees also helped the RedHawks finish second in the 4x100m relay in a season-best 41.82. Miami picked up 18 points between the two relays.
In field events, McCarty won the long jump with a season-best jump of 23-6.25 (7.17m) for his third event victory while Rees was second with a mark of 23-4 (7.11m) and Mitchell placed fourth. Redshirt sophomore David Serrano (Pickerington, Ohio) settled for second with a personal-best leap of 6-9.75 (2.08m) in the high jump, after losing a jump-off with Findlay's Cory Vales. In the pole vault, redshirt sophomore Matt Rudin (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) was third tying a personal-best clearance of 15-7 (4.75m) for another six team points.
Sophomore John Brockman (Granville, Ohio) claimed the javelin title with a toss of 190-8 (58.11m) while Rudin placed third (175-2/53.39m). Freshman Lucas Ferguson (Mount Vernon, Ohio) finished second in the discus with a heave of 161-3 (49.14m) while junior John Gausmann (Naperville, Ill.) was third in 160-4 (48.87m), both of which are personal bests, while sophomore Nathan Hoch (Logan, Ohio) took fifth.
Miami competes next weekend at the All-Ohio Championships hosted by Ohio University April 16-17 in Athens, Ohio. The RedHawks then host the RedHawk Invitational, their second meet of 2010, the following weekend.
