SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Redshirt sophomore Rachel Patterson was the lone member of the Miami University women's track and field team to compete Friday night at the Alex Wilson Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame at the Loftus Sports Center. The meet is Miami's final indoor meet of 2010, as Patterson was looking to improve upon her NCAA provisional qualifying time before the NCAA Championships next weekend
Patterson (Rochester, Mich.) placed seventh in the 5000m run in 16:47.84, which is the second-fastest time in Miami indoor history, but the time did not top Patterson's school-record and NCAA provisional mark of 16:40.13, which she set at the Meyo Invitational on Feb. 6, which was also hosted by Notre Dame. The field for the NCAA Championships will be announced Monday, when Patterson will learn if she qualified.
"Rachel went after it (for a better time) and a ran out of gas the last mile. She ran really well through the first two miles but kind of died on the last one," said head coach Kelly Phillips. "She did a good job overall, though."UNC-Charlotte's Amanda Goetschius won the 5000m race in 16:09.19 among a field of 15.
The rest of the RedHawks will try to improve upon or earn NCAA provisional or automatic qualifying marks Saturday at the Alex Wilson Invitational. Action begins at 11 a.m. with the shot put and 60-meter hurdles prelims.
