Women's Tennis Rallies to Top Georgia State

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- After losing the doubles point, Miami rallied to capture four of six singles matches to defeat Georgia State Friday afternoon in women's tennis action. Junior Megan Martzolf improved to 11-0 on the season, winning the deciding match in three sets.
The Panthers won two of three in doubles action to open a 1-0 lead. Anastasia Dracheva and Stephanie Bridger started things with an 8-2 triumph at No. 3, but Riekie Honiball and Cara Wald fell by a similar score at No. 2. In the decider, Martzolf and Stephanie Danesis battled to the end, but dropped the point 8-6.
The singles portion began with an easy Miami win at the No. 6 position. Bridger never surrendered a game in a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing of her opponent. Georgia State won the next two matches to open a 3-1 advantage, but did not win again.
Wald posted a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 5, then Honiball rallied from a set down to even the score at three-all, 3-6 6-1 6-0.
So the match came down to the No. 3, where Martzolf took the opening set 6-3 over Gresova before falling 4-6 in the second. The RedHawk junior pushed through in the end, winning her match and the team victory 6-4 in the final set.
"This was a tough match today against a very good Georgia State team," Head Coach Ricky Rosas said. "Losing the doubles point forces you to dig deeper in singles play."
Miami continues its southern swing Sunday at UNC-Wilmington.
