RedHawk Decathletes Open 2010 Outdoor Season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Although most of the Miami University men's track and field team begins the 2010 outdoor season next weekend, three RedHawks kicked off the 2010 season Thursday at the Charlotte 49er Classic, competing in the decathlon at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of UNC-Charlotte. The first five events were held Thursday while the final five events of the decathlon will be contested Friday morning.
Junior Michael McCarty (Hudson, Ohio) sits in second place halfway through the competition with 3,686 points while freshman Reggie Mitchell (Cincinnati, Ohio), competing in his first collegiate outdoor meet, is in third not far behind with 3,625 points. West Virginia Wesleyan's Ricky Kump holds a narrow two-point margin over McCarty after day one with 3,688 points. The third RedHawk competing, redshirt sophomore Matt Rudin (Middleburg Heights, Ohio), rests in sixth place with 3,115 points, as he is competing in his first career decathlon.
McCarty earned a first-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 11.46m/37-7.25 to pick up 574 points, while taking second in the long jump (6.90m/22-7.75) and third in both the 100m dash (11.04) and the 400m dash (50.13). Mitchell won the long jump with a leap of 7.02m/23-0.5 to grab 818 points while taking second in the 400m dash (50.10) and fourth in the 100m dash (11.13).
The trio of RedHawks will conclude the decathlon at the 49er Classic Friday beginning at 9 a.m. with the 110-meter hurdles. Check back with MURedHawks.com Friday for final results of the decathlon.
