The Miami Sports Marketing Academy is an internship program focused on providing Miami students with the opportunity to intern in the Sports Marketing Department while simultaneously developing transferable skills to work in the business of athletics. Haley Holman, a junior marketing major, shares her experience in the program...
After 7 months of interning with the Miami Sports Marketing Academy, I can truly say I have had a great experience. The Miami Sports Marketing Academy was immediately appealing to me because it combined my passion for athletics with my desire for a career in Marketing and Public Relations.
My experience started out over the summer when I began my internship in the Sports Marketing Department. During this time I did everything from writing press releases for www.muredhawks.com to researching creative new promotional ideas. These tasks were an advantageous opportunity for me to get my "feet wet" and learn the workings of sports marketing. Despite the typical office work to be done, most of the efforts going on over the summer were in preparation for the "Rumble at the River", Miami's football home opener against the University of Kentucky at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati. The "Rumble at the River" was an exciting event to see carried out and the enthusiasm surrounding the game made me excited for my game day experiences to come.
One of the best aspects of the Sports Marketing Academy has been the hands-on experience I have received helping out at games for hockey, field hockey, football and basketball. Working behind the scenes is always eventful with promotions to execute and presentations to coordinate. These games are a great way to interact with fans and students alike in order to gain experience in the workings of college sports and, more importantly, contribute to the future success of Miami athletics. Most recently at our Lunch and Learn sessions, we had the opportunity to discuss anything and everything regarding Miami athletics with Athletic Director, Brad Bates, and Director of Development, Jude Killy. It was inspiring to hear of their passion and support for Miami while also learning about the economics and business strategies involved in running a successful collegiate athletic department. They also encouraged us to understand the significance of our role as interns in the overall success of RedHawk sports, which was rewarding after all of the time and hard work we have put forth.
I would encourage anyone with an interest of working in collegiate or professional athletics to become involved with the Sports Marketing Academy. From helping out at games or working in the office, this internship is a great opportunity to learn about the industry, gain experience and make new connections.
