OXFORD, Ohio -- Thanks to Kent State's surprising victory over Ohio Friday afternoon, the Miami University football team gets to continue its Cinderella season next Friday night (7 p.m.) in the Marathon Mid-American Conference Championship Game at Detroit's Ford Field against the Northern Illinois Huskies.
The RedHawks (7-1, 8-4) finished their regular season last Tuesday evening with a 23-3 victory over Temple and had to wait for the finish of the Ohio-Kent State contest Friday. With Ohio's 28-6 loss to Kent State, Miami earned the MAC's East Division title with a 7-1 conference record while Ohio fell to second place with a 6-2 conference record.
Northern Illinois (8-0, 10-2) finished its regular season Friday with a 71-3 triumph at Eastern Michigan.
Coach Michael Haywood's RedHawks--America's most improved college football team--will attempt to become only the third school in MAC history to go from worst to first in the 64-year history of the conference. Miami struggled a year ago in Haywood's first season, finishing last in the East with a 1-7 record. In 2010, Miami registered the most improved single-season turn-around in MAC history, winning seven of its eight league games.
