Miami RedHawks (6-4; 5-1 MAC)
vs.
Akron Zips (0-10; 0-6 MAC)
Miami faces its final road trip of the 2010 regular-season this week when it travels to Akron for a Wednesday night contest. The RedHawks won their third consecutive road game last week, 24-21 at Bowling Green, on a 33-yard field goal by Trevor Cook with no time remaining.
Despite being East Division rivals, the teams haven't met since 2007, when a fumble return was the only points in a 7-0 RedHawk win. Miami leads 13-5-1, although the teams have split eight games in Akron. This is MU's first appearance at InfoCision Stadium.
THE COACHES
MIAMI HEAD COACH Michael Haywood (Notre Dame, `86) is in his second season at the helm of the Miami program ... 7-15 overall record, 6-8 MAC record ... served as Fighting Irish offensive coordinator the previous four seasons ... named NCAA Division I-A Assistant Coach of the Year in 2005 by the American Football Coaches Association.
AKRON HEAD COACH ROB IANELLO (Catholic, `88) is in his first season guiding the Zips and owns an 0-10 record at UA, including an 0-6 mark in the MAC. Ianello and Michael Haywood served together at Notre Dame from 2005-08 on the staff of head coach Charlie Weis.
QUICK HITS
1. Coach Michael Haywood'S RedHawks hope to improve their Mid-American Conference record to 6-1 next Wednesday at Akron. That would be Miami's best MAC start since 2004 when MU won the East Division title with a 7-1 record.
2. With a 6-4 record, Miami is now bowl eligible. MU has five more victories than it recorded in all of 2009 (1-11). No other team in Division I college football has improved as much as the RedHawks.
3. Senior placekicker Trevor Cook (Sioux Falls, SD) hit a 33-yard field goal as time expired to lead Miami past Bowling Green.
4. With a 221-yard passing effort vs. Bowling Green, sophomore quarterback Zac Dysert (Ada) became just the sixth Miami player to eclipse the 5,000-yard mark.
