Miami Post-Game Notes
Sophomore junior college transfer Cory Brown made his first start as a RedHawk at left tackle Saturday.
Senior kicker Trevor Cook drilled a 36-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 21-yarder in the fourth frame making him 9-of-10 on the year on field goals. He now has 31 field goals for his career which moves him into a tie with Mike Kiebach for fifth on the career field goals list. He also now has three multi-field goal games this season and eight in his career. He leads the RedHawks with 39 points on the season.
Junior wide receiver Chris Givens hauled in a 44-yard catch in the second quarter, his longest of the season and the third-longest for Miami on the year. He finished with 104 yards on five catches in the game after entering the contest with just 46 yards on five grabs in the four previous games this season. He just missed his career best of 112 yards at Minnesota in 2007, making today's game just his second 100-yard receiving performance.
Freshman cornerback Dayonne Nunley nabbed his second career interception Saturday late in the third quarter. He snared his first collegiate pick Sept. 11 vs. Eastern Michigan. He also finished with a career high eight tackles on the day, including five solo stops.
Senior wide receiver Jamal Rogers racked up a career-high 90 receiving yards Saturday on eight catches. His previous-best effort was 86 yards against Buffalo last year while he was one catch shy of his career high.
Miami sophomore defensive lineman Austin Brown blocked a Kent State punt in the fourth quarter that was returned 18 yards for a touchdown by sophomore linebacker Evan Harris. The score was Harris' second of the season after returning an interception for a touchdown Sept. 18 against Colorado State. The touchdown also marked Miami's first blocked punt for a touchdown since Chris Givens ran a blocked punt back 60 yards Nov. 24, 2008 against Ohio. The block was Brown's third career blocked kick after blocking a pair of field goals in his freshman campaign. Harris also made a career-high 10 stops in the game, including six solo tackles.
Junior safety Anthony Kokal made the game-saving interception in the end zone late in fourth quarter to stop Kent State's game-tying and possible game-winning drive. It was his second career pick and Miami's second of the game. The RedHawks have now intercepted multiple passes in three games this year (all at home), grabbing three against Eastern Michigan, two against Colorado State and now two today. On the year, Miami has at least one interception in four straight games and eight on the year after grabbing just six picks all of 2009.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Zac Dysert went 31-for-46 on the day for 294 yards and a touchdown. He also made his first career start against the Golden Flashes on the road last year. In that game, he totaled 444 yards of offense (337 through the air and 107 on the ground). The 444 yards of offense is the seventh-highest total in school history.
Miami is now off to a 2-0 start in MAC play for the first time since 2007 when the 'Hawks began league play 3-0. The 3-2 start for the RedHawks is their best start overall since going 4-1 in 2003.
