Several RedHawks Make Season Debut at Findlay Classic

FINDLAY, Ohio - After just four RedHawks competed on the opening day of the Findlay Indoor Classic at the Malcolm Athletic Center, the rest of the Miami University men's track and field team took to action Saturday on the final day of competition with eight RedHawks, plus a relay team, earning top-five finishes.
Junior David Serrano (Pickerington, Ohio) tied for second in the high jump with a leap of 6-5.50 (1.97m) while junior Michael McCarty (Hudson, Ohio) also placed second in the long jump with a jump of 22-10 (6.96m). Freshman John Cantwell (Holland, Pa.) took third in the triple jump with a distance of 43-0.5 (13.12m) in his first collegiate action. Sophomore Nathan Hoch (Logan, Ohio) rebounded after a disappointing showing in the weight throw Friday to take seventh in the shot put with a toss of 49-9.75 (15.18m).
McCarty also finished tied for second in the pole vault among unseeded vaulters with a height of 12-11.50 (3.95m) while redshirt sophomore Matt Rudin (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) was sixth among seeded vaulters with a vault of 14-5.25 (4.40m).
On the track, Miami's 4x400m relay team took third, as a trio of freshmen in Alex Trent (Middletown, Ohio), Alieu Sillah (Richmond, Va.) and Jack Spilman (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), along with junior Justinn Eddie (Cleveland, Ohio), combined to cross in 3:26.77.
Spilman was also the runner-up in the 600-meter run in his first collegiate meet, clocking in at 1:22.44, just two-tenths of a second behind the race's winner. Eddie, meanwhile, also finished sixth in the 60-meter dash finals out of 79 competitors in a time of 7.01, while placing eighth in the 200-meter dash in 22.81 out of 82 sprinters.
Junior Jesse Whitman (St. Joseph, Mich.) and freshman Tyler Nichols (South Euclid, Ohio) both qualified for the 60-meter hurdles finals and tied for fourth in a time of 8.65 seconds.
In the 3000m run, senior Paul Krebs (Kettering, Ohio) finished third in 8:35.31 while sophomore Brett Wagner (Toledo, Ohio) was seventh in 8:58.78.
In the 400-meter dash, junior Dan Hull (Warren, Ohio) took seventh in 51.15 while freshman David Curtin (Mason, Ohio) took sixth in the 800-meter final in 2:01.21 in his first action as a RedHawk.
Miami will compete in its second of three NCAA-allowed indoor meets in two weeks, as the RedHawks travel to Bowling Green, Ohio Feb. 12-13 for the All-Ohio Indoor Championships, hosted by the Bowling Green Falcons.
