BOISE, Idaho - In the first-ever meeting between the Miami RedHawks (0-2) and Boise State Broncos (2-0), the twelfth-ranked Broncos used four interceptions and a vaunted air attack to down the Red and White 48-0 Saturday night at Bronco Stadium in Miami's first road game of 2009. The loss was Miami's worst since a 49-0 defeat at the hands of Michigan State in 1989.
The RedHawks were out-gained 441 yards to 194, with 314 of Boise State's yards coming through the air. Miami did control time of possession, however, holding the ball for 34:53. The 'Hawks finished with 14 first downs, while BSU gained 17. The interceptions and a blocked punt proved to be costly for Miami, as they were shut out for a second straight game.
Senior quarterback Daniel Raudabaugh (Coppell, Texas) went 21-for-35 for 155 yards with two interceptions for Miami, while Kellen Moore, his counterpart, completed 16 passes on 26 attempts for 307 yards and four touchdowns with one pick. Titus Young caught six balls for 114 yards and two scores for BSU, while Austin Pettis nabbed four passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. DJ Harper ran for 91 yards on 13 carries and a score for the Broncos as well. Junior wide receiver Chris Givens (Chillicothe, Ohio) led Miami with 61 yards on seven catches, while redshirt junior wideout Armand Robinson (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) tied a career high with five catches for 54 yards.
After Boise State went three-and-out on its opening possession, the Broncos jumped out to a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter when Pettis hauled in a 17-yard reception from Moore to cap a six-play, 92-yard drive. BSU made it 14-0 late in the first quarter when Moore connected with Tyler Shoemaker for a 14-yard score, which was set up by a George Iloka interception.
The Broncos threatened again midway through the second quarter, but redshirt junior cornerback Brandon Stephens (Strongsville, Ohio) thwarted the drive with his first-career interception on Miami's 1-yard line. A blocked punt at the 50-yard line with under a minute to go, however, allowed Boise State to strike quickly with a four-play, 50-yard drive that ended in Moore's third touchdown pass, this time to Young for a 25-yard score with just eight ticks left on the clock. BSU muffed the extra point, though, to head into the half on top of the 'Hawks 20-0.
The Broncos out-gained Miami, 245 yards to 117 in the first 20 minutes, despite the 'Hawks controlling the ball for 18 minutes. The RedHawks, who had just 10 first downs a week earlier, matched that total in the first half, while BSU earned 11 first downs. Moore finished the half 11-for-20 for 204 yards with the three scores and the interception, while Raudabaugh was 13-for-22 for 101 yards, but threw two picks. Pettis had three catches for 94 yards to lead the way for BSU, while Robinson hauled in four catches for 46 yards to pace Miami over the first two quarters.
Harper scampered into the end zone on a three-yard run with 7:09 remaining in the third quarter to put the Broncos on top 27-0 and Moore connected with Young for a second touchdown with 2:11 remaining in the stanza to make it a 34-0 contest. Doug Martin tacked on a four-yard touchdown for BSU following an interception deep in Miami territory with 9:46 to play and another short touchdown run by Martin late in the final frame made the final score 48-0.
The RedHawks continue their three-game road trip as they travel to Western Michigan Sept. 19 to open Mid-American Conference play. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET at Waldo Stadium.
