OXFORD, Ohio - "Haywood-Ball" makes its debut next Saturday (March 21) at Miami University when first-year head coach Mike Haywood's troops get their first official workout on the grass fields outside of Yager Stadium.
RedHawk players have participated in grueling strength and conditioning workouts since January and now they get to display their football skills to Haywood and his totally new staff.
"We've concentrated on implementing our fourth-quarter program the last several weeks," said Haywood. "Our team needs to get bigger, faster and stronger. Before we get into any formations, we will stress the basics, including building our technique and fundamental skills."
At his introductory press conference on December 30 at Miami's Voice of America Learning Center in West Chester, Haywood vowed that every RedHawk player would get an opportunity to win a starting job, and he's sticking by that mantra. Each of the 45 returning letter winners--19 on offense, 23 on defense and three special teamers--will begin spring workouts on the same level as each of the 36 young men who haven't yet won monograms.
Miami's football squad will have a total of 15 practices, culminating with the annual Red & White Game at Yager Stadium on Saturday, April 18, at 1 p.m. The game is part of the Spring Sports Extravaganza, a day that features the Miami Men's and Women's Track & Field Invitational at George Rider Field (12 noon), a doubleheader for the RedHawk softball team against Northern Illinois (4 p.m.), and a baseball game against Buffalo (6 p.m.).
