As several winter sports are just starting or are just a few competitions into their seasons, the fall sports teams are beginning to battle in Mid-American Conference postseason action.
Good luck to the Miami's men's and women's cross country teams as they run in the MAC Championships this Saturday. The RedHawk women try to defend their MAC crown from a year ago, while the men's team looks to better its second-place finish in 2008. Races begin at 11 a.m. at Ohio University.
Women's soccer (9-7-1; 5-4-1 MAC) secured a berth in the MAC Tournament with a 2-0 win over Northern Illinois at Miami Soccer Field on Sunday. (RECAP) Senior keeper Krista Pace made the only stop she needed to earn her sixth clean sheet of the season, which ties for second on Miami's single-season shutouts list. Pace already is the all-time shutouts leader at Miami with 14. On Friday, the RedHawks dropped a 1-0 decision at home to Western Michigan. (RECAP) Miami rounds out the regular season with a 3 p.m. match against Ball State on Thursday and waits to find out its opponent and whether it will be home or away for the MAC tournament quarterfinals on Sunday.

Last weekend, the RedHawk football team (0-8; 0-4 MAC) was nipped by Northern Illinois on Homecoming, 27-22. (RECAP) Redshirt freshman quarterback Zac Dysert amassed a career-high 348 yards passing, connecting on 27-of-37 pass attempts while throwing a career-best three touchdown strikes. Junior wide receiver Armand Robinson also had a career high with 123 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

On Saturday, Miami inducted Steve Cady (coach/administrator), Nicole Catalano (women's tennis), Candice Honroth (women's track and field), Richard "Red" Hopkins (football/baseball/men's basketball), Stephanie Otten (volleyball) and Theresa Shepherd (softball) into the Miami Athletic Hall of Fame.
A junior midfielder Christine Brightwell goal 3:38 into overtime gave the field hockey team (10-8; 6-2 MAC) a 2-1 victory at Missouri State Sunday afternoon in Miami's lone game of the week. (RECAP) It was the RedHawks' fourth overtime victory of the season. The RedHawks round out their regular season at Kent State on Saturday and at Ohio on Sunday.
Congratulations to sophomore defenseman Matt Tomassoni, who was tabbed CCHA Defensive Player of the Week last week. (RELEASE) Ice hockey (4-1-1; 1-1-0-0 CCHA) skated to a 2-1 win over CCHA foe Michigan State on Friday behind two junior forward Tommy Wingels goals and 24 saves by sophomore goaltender Cody Reichard. (RECAP) Although the No. 1 RedHawks rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the third period on Saturday, Miami suffered its first defeat of the season with a 3-2 overtime-loss to the Spartans. (RECAP) The RedHawks will be on the road the next two weekends beginning with a series at Northern Michigan this weekend.

The men's golf team finished fifth among the 12-team field at the Georgetown Intercollegiate last week. (RECAP) Junior Michael Drobnick led the RedHawks, tying for fifth among the tournament field. The team concludes the fall portion of its schedule when it travels to Fort Myers, Fla. to participate in the Renaissance Invitational Nov. 1-2.
Volleyball (12-10; 7-3 MAC) captured a four-set win at Ball State on Saturday (RECAP) after suffering a three-set lost at Toledo on Friday. (RECAP) The RedHawks rallied from a first-set loss to the Cardinals, winning three-straight sets to seize the road win on Saturday. Miami continues a four-match road stretch, playing at Akron on Friday and at Buffalo on Saturday.
Men's swimming and diving (2-1) picked up a 143.5-115.5 win over Xavier on Saturday in its lone competition of the week. (RECAP) Miami travels to Purdue on Friday and competes against Notre Dame and Cleveland State at Notre Dame on Saturday.
Miami's women's swimming and diving team (1-2) got its season underway last weekend. In its home and season opener, Miami lost to Purdue, 181.5-116.5, on Friday. (RECAP) On Saturday, Miami split its squad, sending 14 RedHawks to compete at Louisville while the remainder of the team remained in Oxford to take on Xavier. The RedHawks defeated Xavier 147.5-114.5 and lost to Louisville 164-130. (RECAP) Miami opens MAC action this weekend, hosting Buffalo at 5 p.m. Friday and Akron at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Women's tennis also had individuals compete at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Tournament last week. (RECAP)
Men's basketball hosts the first of two exhibition games this weekend. The RedHawks face California (Pa.) Sunday at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
