After starting the season with four games away from Oxford, first-year head coach Michael Haywood's Miami University football team plays its first game of 2009 at Yager Stadium Saturday, as the RedHawks face the No. 10/11 Cincinnati Bearcats, which will be the highest-ranked team to ever invade Yager Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Miami's Family Weekend. Saturday's "Battle for the Victory Bell" will serve as the 114th meeting all-time between Miami and Cincinnati.

Saturday has been declared a "WHITE OUT" for all Miami fans. Coach Haywood is urging fans to wear white to show their support for his RedHawk football team. "It's a great opportunity to play at home for the first time this season," said Haywood. "We need our student body and the fans to wear white. It's Family Weekend and we need the RedHawk family to serve as our 12th man against our biggest rival." (COMPLETE RELEASE)
Fans coming to Saturday's game need to be aware that security measures at Yager Stadium will be adjusted. Bags exceeding 8.5"-5.5"-2" will be not be permitted into the stadium, unless allowed by written permission of a medical professional. If a fan's bag does not fit into the bins that will be located at the gates, stadium personnel will advise the patron that the bag cannot enter the stadium.

Be sure to get to the football game early and enjoy Tailgate Town, located on the West Lawn of Millett Hall (a location change from last year). Tailgate Town opens at 11 a.m. and offers a free family-friendly tailgate atmosphere. Red & White Club members are encouraged to stop by the Red & White Club Tent in Tailgate Town prior to the game. Enjoy snacks and refreshments with other Miami fans before kick-off.
Located near Tailgate Town, the Miami University Student Athletic Trainer's Association will be sponsoring a "DUNK TANK" Fundraiser from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The event is to help raise funds for the student run organization to help give members an opportunity to attend the annual National Athletic Trainer's Association Educational Symposium, which will be held in Philadelphia, Pa. this June. The funds will assist the group with registration fees and travel accommodations. The MUSATA organization has been existence for almost 40 years to help young men and women enhance their educational, leadership, and networking opportunities through bi-monthly educational in-services, local/state/national educational symposiums sponsored by the NATA and area organizations such as the Greater Cincinnati Athletic Trainer's Association, and social events. Come dunk a member of the Miami Sports Medicine Staff or a Miami student-athlete this Saturday. Cost is $1 a throw or $2 for three throws.
The Farmer School of Business, the Talawanda School District and the Miami University Athletic Department are starting a new tradition to get "In Step with the ComMUnity." The three are coming together with the community to collect donations of school supplies to benefit Talawanda students. Bring an unused/new school supply to the business school the week of the game and on game day, then, join the Rally Walk prior to the football game. (MORE INFORMATION)
This weekend, Miami will honor eight student-athletes with the department's top annual awards during Saturday's football game. Chris Heaton (men's swimming and diving) was named the Male Athlete of the Year, while Kelsey Vehr (women's swimming and diving) and Monica Gorny (women's tennis) shared Female Athlete of the Year honors. Allison Stevens (women's swimming and diving) and Lauren Magliola (synchronized skating) were the Female Co-Scholar-Athletes of the Year, while Pat Sovacool (men's cross country/track and field) and Matt Erwood (baseball) shared Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades. Jenna Schone (women's basketball) earned Miami's highest honor for a female student-athlete, the Leann Grimes Davidge Memorial Award. (RELEASE)
Also this weekend, Miami will honor Tom Van Voorhis. Van Voorhis was a coach, physical education instructor and athletic administrator for Miami from 1921-56 who taught many Cradle members in the classroom. A statue of Van Voorhis will be placed at the entrance of the Cradle of Coaches Plaza along with the eight Miami graduates who have earned recognition as national collegiate or professional coaches of the year and/or been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The list includes Earl "Red" Blaik, Weeb Ewbank, Paul Brown, Paul Dietzel, Ara Parseghian, John Pont, Bo Schembechler and Carm Cozza. (COMPLETE RELEASE)
