CLEVELAND, Ohio - Junior setter Andrea Atteberry was named MAC East Volleyball Player of the week Monday after a fantastic performance in leading the Miami University volleyball team to a 3-0 record and the tournament championship at the UNLV Tournament over the weekend. Atteberry recorded 134 assists and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player as the RedHawks defeated Cal State Fullerton, UNLV and 10th-ranked Wisconsin to improve their record to 4-2 on the season.
As the team's primary setter, Atteberry is required to take a leadership role and help direct her teammates as well as set the ball in position for them to make kills. That was especially on display against the Badgers, as she had 53 assists and even led the team with 14 digs. Her performance was the key factor as Miami knocked off nationally ranked Wisconsin 3-1 (25-13, 25-23, 21-25, 29-27). It was the third time in the past two years that the RedHawks have defeated a top 25 team, and the 10th-ranked Badgers represent the highest-ranked team beaten by Miami.
Atteberry is moving up on the career lists for assists at Miami. She now has 2,577 assists, which ranks sixth all-time.
Miami returns to action next weekend when it travels to Bowling Green, Ky. for the Western Kentucky Tournament. On September 12, the RedHawks will face Tennessee Tech at 2:00 p.m., followed by a 7:00 p.m. match against the host Lady Toppers. Miami will then take on Furman in their tournament finale on September 13 at 5:00 p.m.
