OXFORD, Ohio - Freshman pitcher Jessica Simpson earned two victories Saturday as Miami swept a softball doubleheader from Wright State. The RedHawks won game one 2-0, and then scored in the bottom of the seventh to take game two 8-7. Miami is now 3-0-1 in the fall exhibition season.
Simpson pitched a complete game shutout in the opener. She gave up eight hits and struck out six. The Raiders were able to get a baserunner in each inning, but every time Simpson was up to the challenge and did not let a runner touch home plate.
The RedHawks scored all the runs they needed in the third inning. With Lindsay Randall on third and Jordan McElroy on second, Meghan Mawn singled to score Randall. The next batter, Alicia Hogl, also singled which scored McElroy.
Miami jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. Third baseman Daniela Torres had the big hit of the inning, a two-run single.
After a four-run fifth inning, Wright State took its first lead of the game at 5-4. The RedHawks responded in the bottom half of the fifth when Torres singled to score Mawn. They then took the lead back at 6-5 when Kelly Cabana hit into a fielder's choice that scored Jenna McGivney.
The Raiders retook the lead by scoring two in the top of the sixth inning. Miami tied the score at 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth, when Mawn scored on a fielding error. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh and no one on base, Ashley Gartland started a rally with a single up the middle. McElroy then surprised the third baseman by dropping down a bunt that she was able to beat out. Gartland attempted to run for third base, and the Wright State first baseman tried to throw her out. The throw sailed high and into the Raiders dugout, and Gartland scored the winning run.
Simpson gained her second win of the day after coming into the game in relief in the top of the sixth inning. Torres was 3-for-4 with four RBI. Gartland was 3-for-4 with one run scored. Mawn was 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored.
Miami returns to action Sunday when it hosts Dayton in a doubleheader that starts at 2 p.m.
