PREVIEWING KENT STATE: Coach Doug Martin's Golden Flashes, who were idle last week, come to Oxford with a 1-6 overall record and an 0-3 mark in MAC play. KSU's only win so far in 2008 was at home on Sept. 13 vs. Delaware State (24-3). KSU has been defeated by Boston College (0-21), Iowa State (28-48), Louisiana (27-44), Ball State (20-41), Akron (27-30, OT) and Ohio (19-26). Senior quarterback Julian Edelman (623 yards rushing and 1,022 yards passing) and junior running back Eugene Jarvis (257 yards rushing in four games) are two of the conference's most dangerous offensive threats. Shawn Bayes is the team's leading receiver (24 catches, 19.6 avg). The Flashes lead the MAC in rushing offense (205.0 ypg). Defensively, KSU is led by the league's top tackler, linebacker Derek Burrell (10.9 tpg). Defensive back Brian Lainhart ranks fifth among MAC tacklers with 9.3 tpg. Lainhart has recorded a league-leading four interceptions this season.
MIAMI HEAD COACH Shane Montgomery ON KENT STATE: "Kent has two of the best offensive weapons in the conference in Julian Edelman and Eugene Jarvis. They always scare you with what they do offensively. Edelman can hurt you with both his legs and his arm, and, though he's not very big, Jarvis is very quick and very fast. Defensively, we've felt that they have had one of the better units in the MAC for a number of years. They're very fundamentally sound and have a good scheme. Kent has been effective in stopping the run ever since I've been at Miami. Their season has been very similar to ours, but they've lost some close football games. They're going to come in here with nothing to lose."
