BUFFALO, N.Y. - Miami continued its recent strong play Friday with a 3-0 victory over Buffalo. It is the third consecutive match that the RedHawks have won in straight sets. Miami is now 10-7 overall and 4-1 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bulls fall to 5-14 overall and 0-5 in the MAC.
In the first set, the RedHawks jumped to a quick 4-1 lead off two kills from last week's MAC East Division Player of the Week Megan Griffin, as well as ones from Andrea Atteberry and Maria Leahy. With the score 12-8, Miami scored seven straight points off of Melissa Zenz's serve. A 12-4 run by Buffalo pulled them to within three at 20-23, but an attack error by the Bulls and a kill from Hallie Hanks gave the RedHawks the 25-21 set one win.
After a competitive beginning to the second set, Miami found itself ahead, 5-4. Three kills by Griffin, combined with kills from Leahy, Hanks, Michele Metzler and Emily Schroeder sparked a 10-2 run that gave the RedHawks a 15-6 lead and control of the set. With the score 19-9, Atteberry, Schroeder and Metzler each recorded kills and Miami won set two, 25-11.
The two teams traded points early in the third set as Miami took a 10-9 lead. The RedHawks then went on a 9-2 run that featured a service ace by Leahy as well as Atteberry assisting on two kills from Hanks and one from Griffin. Miami set up match point at 24-17 when it forced Buffalo into an attack error. The Bulls did not give up, as they scored five straight points to pull within two at 22-24. The RedHawks called timeout and inserted freshman Jenn Caylor into the lineup. She then proceeded to score the match winning kill off an assist from Michelle Mangia, as Miami took set three 25-22.
Griffin led the team with 11 kills, while Metzler chipped in 10. Zenz had 17 digs, while Atteberry was the leader with 29 assists. Miami hit .261 as a team, compared to only a .036 hitting percentage for Buffalo.
