Notes from Camp Oxford: Day 3

OXFORD, Ohio -- Thanks to overcast skies and a gentle breeze, conditions for the second day of on-field practice at Yager Stadium were a little more comfortable for Coach Shane Montgomery's Miami RedHawks football team. Once again, the players wore helmets, shorts and t-shirts, but no pads.
FRESHMAN WALK-ONS: Joining the 22 scholarship freshmen are six first-year walk-ons. The players, all products of the state of Ohio. include:
*MIKE BOLINGER (5-9, 185), a first-team All-Southwest Ohio placekicker from Eaton High School
*STEVE BRAY (6-1, 230), an all-star center from Cincinnati's Turpin H.S., and son of RedHawks broadcaster Tim Bray
*BRIAN LANE (6-3, 250), an all-league defensive lineman from Cincinnati's Moeller H.S., and son of former Notre Dame player Mike Lane
*TJ LATTIMORE (5-8, 172), all-star running back from Maple Heights H.S.
*SCOTT MADSEN (6-2, 218), all-league linebacker from Dublin Coffman H.S., and brother of Ohio State basketball's Kyle Madsen
*LEE ZAMOS (6-5, 270), all-league offensive tackle from Kenston H.S.
FOUR PLEASANT SURPRISES: Miami defensive coordinator Jay Hood was asked to list four pleasant surprises from the defensive side of the ball over the first two days of practice. Here are his responses:
*JOEY HUDSON: "... it's fun to see him back out there" (Hudson sat out Miami's spring drills)
*D.J. SVABIK: "... showing us what he can do after being hampered by injuries"
*JAMES CASE: "...one of our older guys who's practicing well at defensive end"
*BEN BENNETT: "...has shown improvement everyday and will give us better depth at safety"

Currently featured is a piece about Miami's first day of practice, with comments from head athletic trainer Gale Newton. The third of the two-minute features will appear on the website next Monday (8/6/07) and will focus on the RedHawk quarterbacks.
Miami's Practice Schedule for the next five days:
Sunday, August 5 -- approximately 4:45 - 7:00 p.m.
Monday, August 6 -- approx. 3:15 - 5:30 p.m.
Tuesday, August 7 -- approx. 9:15 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Wednesday, August 8 -- approx. 8:45 - 11:15 a.m. AND 4:30 - 7:00 p.m.
Thursday, August 9 -- approx. 9:30 - 11:45 a.m.
