HAMILTON, Ohio--Miami University's women's tennis team (4-5; 0-0 MAC) dropped its second straight match Sunday afternoon at the University of Louisville's Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, falling to the Big East contender, 7-0, but showed signs of progress in the loss.
Despite playing an aggressive foe that was able to capitalize on fast playing conditions, Miami was competitive a day after suffering a disappointing loss to Indiana State. The RedHawks put forth a strong effort on the doubles courts despite giving up the point, getting strong efforts from Remy Swain and Maura Trauernicht in an 8-5 loss at second doubles and determined play from Victoria Pulido and Leda Pesatova in an 8-6 loss at third doubles.
Miami also was swept in singles play, including a 6-1, 6-2 loss at sixth singles that ended a seven-match winning streak for Swain, but received an encouraging effort from returning all-MAC competitor Linda Jirouskova, who took UL's Bianca Gorbea to three sets at third singles in her best outing since returning from injury.
"I'm pleased with the effort today," head coach Ray Reppert said. "Louisville is a talented team, but we adjusted to their style and the speed of their courts to play competitive tennis. We responded well from yesterday's loss and showed good energy today."
Miami faces another stiff challenge next Saturday when it hosts Murray State University, which downed the RedHawks in a tight match last season. Afterward, Miami is off for two weeks before closing out non-conference play versus area rival Xavier.
