Fans coming to Miami University's homecoming football game this Saturday, Sept. 10, are asked to bring money, canned goods or clothing items to donate to victims of Hurricane Katrina. People can bring donations to any of the gates at Yager Stadium for the 2 p.m. game against Central Michigan.
Several student organizations and halls are coordinating the collection of donations that will be sent to hurricane-devastated areas. Most donations will go to the American Red Cross.
Other university responses to the relief effort include Miami's admitting 31 students for fall semester who had been enrolled at Tulane University in New Orleans. Students from other schools contacted Miami but decided not to enroll. Miami is not charging tuition to those students who have already paid tuition at their school.
Miami's music department is organizing a benefit concert for Katrina survivors. Faculty and students will perform varieties of music styles beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, in Hall Auditorium. Once a ticket price is set tickets will be available through Miami's box office at 529-3200.
Students at Miami's Hamilton campus are collecting funds as well as toiletries that will be delivered by the Butler County Sheriff's Department. Students at Miami's Middletown campus are collecting encouragement cards, bags of candy, toys for children and supplies for pets for refugees of Katrina, some of whom are now in Middletown, and others still in the Gulf area.
Miami's Associated Student Government is coordinating efforts among student groups including Program Board, College Democrats and Republicans, Panhellenic Council, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, The Miami Student newspaper, Scholar Leaders, the Honors and Scholars Program, and the Office of Service Learning and Civic Leadership.
Steve Rayo, the Student Body President, has challenged all Miami students to do their part and come out to Yager Stadium on Saturday and make a donation of at least $1 each to the cause.
