CLEVELAND--Three members of Miami University's football team have been recognized with Academic All-Mid-American Conference status the league office announced today. Included on the list of 28 honorees were senior defensive tackle John Glavin (Solon, OH/Solon), senior quarterback Josh Betts (Vandalia, OH/Butler) and senior linebacker David Hutzelman (West Chester, OH/Lakota West).
Glavin joined Akron's Jason Swiger as the only members of the Academic All-MAC team to be honored in three straight seasons. A double major in finance and supply chain management, Glavin carries a 3.37 grade point average and also was a two time ESPN the Magazine academic all-district selection. The senior, who started 10 of 11 games despite battling multiple injuries throughout the season, led Miami's defensive line with 43 tackles, including a team-high 9.5 tackles for loss, an interception and a forced fumble. A four-year contributor, Glavin totaled 31.5 tackles for loss during his career.
Betts, who was a finalist for the 2005 Draddy Trophy which goes to college football's top scholar-athlete, is a repeat selection to the Academic All-MAC team. The senior quarterback carries a 3.43 GPA in finance while leading a passing offense that ranks among the Top 20 nationally. Betts finished his Miami career second on the program's career charts for completions (541), passing yardage (7,029) and passing touchdowns (54), despite starting only two full seasons. This past season, he passed for 3,178 yards and 27 touchdowns as Miami totaled two 1,000-yard receivers for the first time in program history. His 27 TD passes were a single-season record for an 11-game season.
Hutzelman, a former walk-on, broke into Miami's starting lineup at middle linebacker early in the season when starter Derek Rehage was out with injury. Along with making five starts as the quarterback of the RedHawk defense, Hutzelman finished fourth on the team with 50 tackles, including 5.0 tackles for loss. Also an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District pick, the senior enjoyed his best game in a nationally-televised defeat of Cincinnati, in which he was credited with nine tackles and two quarterback hurries. Hutzelman is a finance/marketing double major who carries a 3.60 GPA.
Started in 1965, the Academic All-MAC team recognizes individuals who have made a substantial impact on the field while carrying a minimum grade point average of 3.20.
