OXFORD, Ohio--Three Miami University football standouts have been voted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team selections. Seniors John Glavin (Solon, OH/Solon) and David Hutzelman (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) were tabbed to the first team while senior Steve Burke (Spring, TX/Klein) was a second-team honoree.
In order to be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing while carrying a minimum grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.00 scale and playing a regular role on the field for the team. An impressive five RedHawks were nominated for all-district honors, with Miami's district encompassing all Division I-A and I-AA football programs in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama.
Glavin, who was a second-team all-district selection last season, carries a 3.37 grade point average with a double-major in finance and supply chain management. The senior, who already has completed the degree requirements in his finance major, is one of two returning starters and a proven leader on a young defensive line that has made impressive strides as the season has progressed. From his nose guard position, Glavin has accounted for 34 tackles, to lead the defensive line, and a team-high 9.5 tackles for loss. The former walk-on also owns a quarterback sack, a forced fumble and an interception, despite often facing double teams.
Hutzelman, who started seven games earlier in the season, filled in admirably while the RedHawk linebacking corps was ravaged by injuries to two of its starters. Another former walk-on, Hutzelman ranks fourth on the team with 48 tackles and has totaled 5.0 tackles for loss, including a quarterback sack. The senior also has been in on a forced fumble and fumble recovery while directing Miami's defense from the all-important middle linebacker spot. Though replaced in the starting lineup last week, he remains a key contributor for the RedHawks. Hutzelman carries a 3.60 GPA with a double-major in management and marketing.
Burke, a third-year starter, has bounced back from an injury in 2004 to rank third on the team with 49 tackles this season. A management information systems major with a 3.28 grade point average, Burke has made the move from free safety to strong safety this season. Also a former walk-on, Burke has broken up two passes and recovered a fumble while helping the RedHawks shore up their pass defense. Burke has totaled 181 tackles during his career to rank fourth among Miami's active career leaders.
First-team selections Glavin and Hutzelman are now candidates for Academic All-America voting, with the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team scheduled to be released on Dec. 1. Previously, the Red and White has placed four student-athletes on the Academic All-America team, including first-team selection Andy Pederzolli in 1973, second-team pick Steve Dailey in 1984 and 2000 selections Brian Potter and Eddie Tillitz, who earned first- and second-team plaudits, respectively.
