Miami University senior catcher John Slone is among 44 of the nation's best college baseball stars who have been selected to play in the Cape Cod Baseball League's 42nd Annual All-Star Game on Saturday, July 24 at Eldredge Park in Orleans, Mass.
Slone plays for the Harwich Mariners of Port Harwich, Mass. He is one of five players from the Mariners selected to the All-Star Game by the CCBL's 10 field managers, earning a reserve role on the East Division All-Star Team. Slone, who has played in 22 of the team's 28 games, leads the Mariners with 24 hits and ranks third on the team in batting average (.293) and RBIs (10). He was tabbed the league's player of the week the week of June 24.
Saturday's All-Star Game will be broadcast live on PIXY 103 and in streaming audio with Free Teamline at www.capecodbaseball.org.
Nearly 200 former Cape League players were on Major League Baseball rosters last year, including Boston Red Sox All-Star Nomar Garciaparra and Cy Young Award winner Barry Zito.
Slone was a Third-Team American Baseball Coaches Association All-America pick and a unanimous selection to the All-Mid-American Conference First team. He led the RedHawks with a .375 batting average and recorded the MAC's fourth-longest hitting streak at 26 games. Slone, who is returning to Miami for his senior season, was the 442nd overall pick in this year's draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
