OXFORD, Ohio - For the third straight year the Miami baseball team has representatives on the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Mideast Regional teams in juniors Mike Ferris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) and John Slone (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier). Ferris and Slone are two of 13 players on the All-Mideast First Team.
Last week, Ferris became the second-highest drafted RedHawk in history when the St. Louis Cardinals selected him with their 60th overall pick in the second round of the Major League First-Year Player Draft. Ferris led the RedHawks this season in several offensive categories, including home runs (21), slugging percentage (.755) and on-base percentage (.513). He was an unanimous pick at first base for the Mid-American Conference First Team and three times this season was named the league's East Division Player of the Week. Ferris' marks of 21 home runs and 60 base on balls both set single-season records for the Red and White in 2004.
Also a three-time MAC Player of the Week this season was catcher Slone who joins Ferris on the ABCA All-Mideast Region First Team. Slone was drafted in the 15th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates last week after he recorded a 26-game hitting streak this season for the RedHawks. His .375 batting average and 90 hits were both tops for the Red and White, which helped him to earn an unanimous selection to the MAC First Team.
Ferris and Slone are two of 10 MAC players on the two All-Mideast Region teams. Joining them on the first team are Brian Bixler and Ryan Ford from Eastern Michigan, Jim Geldhof from Central Michigan, Ohio's Anthony Gressick, Toledo's Sean Dobson, Nolan Reimhold from Bowling Green and Andy Sonnanstine from Kent State.
