OXFORD, Ohio - Freshmen pitchers Jeff Day (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) and Keith Weiser (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) became the fourth and fifth Miami baseball players, respectively, to be named Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-Americans last Friday afternoon. The duo combined for a 15-5 record in 2004 and are the first dual Freshman All-America selection in program history.
Weiser, a lefthanded pitcher for the RedHawks, was named the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year after recording an 8-3 record and 4.30 earned run average in 83.2 innings pitched. With 63 strikeouts and only 29 walks his 2.17 K:BB ratio was second on Miami while among the RedHawks' starters he held opponent's to a staff-best .272 batting average. Twice during the season Weiser was named the MAC Pitcher of the Week.
Complementing Weiser in the RedHawks starting rotation was righthander Day, who posted a 7-2 record and 4.58 ERA in 11 starts. He recorded 50 strikeouts and allowed only 20 free passes in 72.2 innings for the Red and White's best K:BB ratio at 2.5. Day's best outing of the season was a seven strikeout performance at Toledo on May 1.
Day and Weiser are the lone representatives from the MAC on this year's Freshman All-America squad. Earning the same accolade last season was sophomore southpaw Graham Taylor.
