OXFORD, Ohio - Another postseason honor was bestowed upon a Miami baseball player this afternoon when the Mid-American Conference announced its 2004 Academic Team. The team, voted on by the league's faculty athletic representatives, is comprised of 17 players from 10 different league schools and includes RedHawk's junior third baseman Brian Canada (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern).
Canada, a 3.50 business student at Miami, opened the season with a 27-game hitting streak that was continued from the 2003 campaign to set the league's third longest hitting streak. He proceeded to bat .372 (74-for-199) from the plate and record career highs in hits (74), runs scored (44), RBIs (52), home runs (8) and total bases (112). Canada was second on the RedHawks in batting average and led the team with a .909 stolen-base percentage (10-of-11). In 55 games this season for the Red and White, Canada finished tied for second on the squad with 22 multiple-hit games and second with 13 multi-RBI contests.
Canada is the first Miami baseball player to be named to the All-MAC Academic squad since 1999.
To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered.
